the vegetables

Sabita is Krishna (boy's) little sister.  She is four going on five. The two of them were separated after their parents died but a few months ago, we were fortunate enough to find her and she came to live with us too.  I was worried about her because just as she moved in, I had to leave for the U.S.  It turns out I didn't have anything to worry about.  She adjusted incredibly well.  I think mostly because she had her brother here–plus she fit right in with the rest of the four year old crew!

Getting to know her has been such a treat.  Yesterday while I was cleaning my room, she peaked her little face through the door.   She asked to come in, plopped herself down on my bed and chatted away while I cleaned.  (It turns out Sabita is a little chatter box.)  She told me stories about all the children in the house and stories about her life. She told me she remembered her mother selling oranges by the side of the road.

And then I stopped her and asked, "Sabita, what's your favorite thing about living here?"

She paused and thought for a few seconds.

---------------------

"The vegetables.  You know what?  I really like the vegetables here.  They are so so good.  I never had vegetables like this before."

And I stopped and looked at her for a minute and smiled.  I thought to myself, "this is something I have to remember."  And I felt proud and grateful... for our home... for our project... for our vegetables... for what we've all created.

"I agree.  The vegetables are really good here.  I like them too." I said.
